iPad Menus

Bye-bye traditional wine menus; hello iPad app. When the South Gate restaurant in New York City announced they were the first to replace their wine lists with an iPad version, it makes one wonder how much longer the days of the sommelier are here to stay. With more than 650 bottles to choose from, the application seems to be an appropriate choice. The technology will also allow users to document new products as they arrive, as well as keep track of which ones are sold out. At the touch of a screen, you too can become a connoisseur. — Alexandra Christopoulos... MORE

Ideas For A Summer-Fresh Menu

In this fast, crazy, workaholic pace of life, I’ve found that nothing is more calming than calling up a few friends for a dinner party. Cooking for others is one of my biggest stress relievers, although the idea of standing behind a hot stove after a hard day may not be everyone’s fancy. When meal planning, I like to indulge in my curiosity and add in new ingredients to spice up older dishes that have become favourites at my house. To me, the plate is like an art canvass and anyone who understands me well already knows my get-togethers often involve themes and specially thought-out menus. If this sounds too difficult, it really isn’t. The efforts of being a hospitable hostess are all worth the endeavour after seeing the guests’ faces light up with smiles. Last weekend,... MORE

Becel Joins Vegan Bandwagon

Health nuts, get ready to squeal: Becel has just come out with vegan margarine. The margarine is subsequently lactose-free, and avoids the use of gluten by being vegan. It appears dreams do come true. No longer will you have to go to that weird, dimly-lit aisle in the grocery store to get some sort of animal-free buttery alternative. No longer will it be from a brand that you’ve never heard of, that may or may not be run by new-age religious zealots. No longer will the cashier look at you strangely as your purchase affirms that you do go to dimly-lit aisles to buy mysterious products. The product has so many other concerns covered, too. It’s non-hydrogenated, there are no trans fats and it’s low in saturated fat. You can bake, cook and pan fry it. This source of Omega-3 can be refrigerated... MORE

Chocolate and Fibre: A Match Made In Granola Heaven

I got 100% of my daily fibre intake the other day -- Did you? Weird question from a blogger you’ve never met, I know. But we had promotional packs of Kellogg’s Fibre Plus Bars brought into our office last week and I went wild. The whole office went choco -- whoops, I meant cuckoo. No no, they don’t have 100% fibre per bar — I just had eaten five of them. They’re delicious! The flavour was Dark Chocolatey Almond, and considering it’s a “healthier” granola bar, its flavour was elegant. The chocolate was sweet and didn’t overpower the light, yet perfectly crunchy granola. The bar proved to be a great mid-morning or mid-afternoon work snack. Satisfying a sweet tooth and nourishing... MORE
